Ken Adair is a 1972 graduate of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Division of Police Academy, as well as the Kentucky Department of Justice Police Academy. Serving as a police officer for 11 years, Ken was the recipient of several awards. In 1975 he received the Professional Service Award and in 1979 he received the Professional Esteem Award from the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government. He joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a Special Agent in 1983. Upon leaving the Bureau, he returned to Lexington, Kentucky to become the Director of Public Safety at Transylvania University. In 1991 Ken was awarded the distinguished Service Award by (CIKCU), the Council of 21 Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities. He later became Director of Public Safety for the Sullivan University Systems, Lexington Campuses and has completed 17 years as a Director of Public Safety for educational institutions. During this time, Ken developed several programs, one which has received national attention as well as several other countries. One such program is “How to survive against an active shooter in the classroom” and the other is “Ballistic testing in the classroom.” These programs are the foundation for this presentation and an active blog on the subject. The information learned has been requested by over 250 colleges and universities from Canada to Australia.
As a professional police officer he was assigned as a training officer for new officers coming out of the academy. He was assigned to the extended merit step program for senior officers that decided to stay on the street because of their experience. He assisted the Commonwealth Attorney’s office in their community relations program designed to teach safety to the citizen’s of Lexington. He has also completed professional training in Terrorism and Violence in the workplace, through the F.B.I. and Eastern Kentucky University.

Ken received his Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and Art (double major) in 1980 from Eastern Kentucky University. In 1994, Ken returned to Eastern Kentucky University to work on a Bachelor of Education degree in teaching and in 2003 attended Sullivan University to study computer programming. Ken’s training and experience include areas such as Major Crime Investigations, Fatality Investigations (Northwestern University), Hostage Negotiations, Advanced Firearms Instructor, Penal Code, Traffic Law and Criminal Law.

As a patrol officer on the street, he was involved in dispatched calls involving weapons and found himself on the wrong end of a gun on several occasions. He has worked high profile cases involving murder and international drug trafficking, as well as everyday street crime. He credits quick thinking and staying calm for staying safe during his career as a law enforcement agent. During his 27 year career as a law enforcement agent, Ken has provided executive protection for then U.S. Vice-President George Bush Sr., U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, Princess Margret and her entourage, Lou Dobbs of CNN, and a Russian Cosmonaut defector to name a few.

Virgina Tech Officer Shot

BLACKSBURG, Va. — A police officer was shot at Virginia Tech on Thursday (12_8-11) morning and campus officials warned everyone to seek shelter while an armed suspect was at large.

Active Shooter Training through FEMA

I believe it is in everyone’s best interest to inform people that Homeland Security and FEMA offer an online training program concerning active shooter situations. Salon Shooting

SEAL BEACH, Calif. — A lone gunman was reported to have opened fire Wednesday in a busy Southern California hair salon, killing at least eight people. A former salon female staffer supposedly told reporters the gunman targeted his ex-wife. Witnesses supposedly told police a custody dispute may have been behind the shootings. The salon was busy at the time, with every hair-dressing station in operation, when the gunman opened fire. One wounded man was found outside the building. It wasn’t clear if he was trying to flee when he was shot. It was said that people were seeking shelter.
One employee locked herself in the salon’s facial room and was unharmed while another man locked himself in a bathroom but was wounded. From my observation, it did look like people were seeking shelter at the time,” he said. A lady, who owns a salon just two doors down from the scene of the shootings, supposedly said she and her customers and employees heard gunshots, and her receptionist saw a man through a window as he was shot in a parking lot.

Every now and then I run across a product that I have to pass on to my readers. As a Director of Public Safety for a University and College I have had a lot of phone calls from salesmen. Unfortunated they take up too much of my time that I feel is valuable. However a couple of days ago I received a call from a salesman that has a great product without the usual high pressure sales. He just asked me to look at his product. Now I being a person who knows if you have a good product, it will sell itself without all of the talk. I looked at his product and feel that it was such a good product, that I am adding it to this post. The young salesman’s name is Bruce Miller and he does not know that I am adding this endorsement. I am adding it because it is a good product for universities and colleges. I think most educational institutions will agree.

What’s in the blog?

I am using one of my older articles to show you the type of material in the blog “Active Shooter Survival”. There are over 90 articles, so you may have to search through them for helpful tips on survival.

In the first photo on the left, the backpack is used in the normal position of a student walking around campus. The second picture in the center shows the backpack being positioned in the front of the student. In this case the shoulder straps are pulled tighter so the pack sits higher on the body, thus covering more of the kill zone of the chest area (heart, lungs, spinal cord, etc. The third picture on the right gives a better view from the front. The backpack stills needs to ride higher than what is shown in the photograph. Adjusting the straps tighter will help. It is also easier to run with the backpack on the front of the body than riding on the back. If you have to attack your attacker this gives some protection, and the ability to still use your hands. Remember the more material between you and the shooter the better. This only protects the chest area, so you still have to be aware of the vulnerability of the rest of your body. As in bulletproof vest, they are only good for the part of the body that they are covering. In testing and shooting of the backpack, some rounds went through the backpack and into the target, however the ones that actually struck books in the backpack were stopped. Measurements of the thickness of those books will be added at a later date. Just remember it is not the backpack that stops the bullets, it is what is contained in the backpack that stops the bullets.
